Description
The Former Swan Hotel, now two retail units, is a building that dates from the mid-18th century and early 19th century. It features Flemish bond brickwork, rendering, and slate roofs. The building is divided into two parts: the earlier section, which used to have a central carriageway, is located on the right, while the later section is on the left. The ground floor, finished in channelled rendering, extends across both parts.
The left section has three storeys, an attic, and a basement, with a mansard roof that includes three dormers behind a parapet. It has paired 4-pane sash windows with moulded architraves and mullion boxes. The second floor features 12-pane sashes, while the first and second floors have 16-pane sashes, all set against good rubbed brick voussoirs and stone cills. The ground floor has two large square late 20th-century shop windows on the left and a wide segmental-headed doorway on the right, with a window above. The building is topped with a moulded stone cornice, blocking course, and a coped parapet, and there are large brick stacks at each gable.
The earlier section on the right has three storeys and a basement, with a five-window layout. The central bay is slightly projected, and the second floor features 9-pane sashes, while the first floor has 12-pane sashes, all with brick voussoirs and stone cills, and exposed boxes. The ground floor has a large segmental-headed opening under a late 20th-century flat hood with glazed doors, replacing the original carriage entry, along with late 20th-century shop windows on the left. The first floor features a central Palladian window with a brick arch and a triple keystone, flanked by paired pilasters supporting an entablature, with swept splayed sides. The central light has radial bars above a door opening to a small balcony with a wrought-iron balustrade. The building also has a moulded stone cornice, blocking course, and coped parapet, with the roof not visible from the street. The interior was remodelled in the 20th century and no notable features are present.
