Description
The Midland Bank, located at 11 High Street, is a pair of houses that underwent remodelling in the mid-18th century, incorporating earlier fabric. The building features Flemish bond brickwork, a tiled roof, and brick stacks. Although constructed as a single entity, the windows are arranged in groups of two and one. Behind the parapeted front, there are two wings with hipped outer ends; No. 11 has a lower wing with a half-timbered gable above later painted brickwork, while the Bank has a low gabled wing from the 19th or 20th century.
The building stands three storeys tall and has three windows. All windows are tripartite sash with 8:12:8 panes, with the first-floor windows being deeper than those on the second floor. Each window features exposed sash and mullion boxes on stone cills supported by four small brackets, and they are topped with v-joint splayed lintels. A late 20th-century shop front is located to the left, and the Bank front has 19th-century pilaster surrounds for a 20th-century insertion. The façade is accentuated by alternating painted stone quoins, a stone modillion cornice, a blocking course, and a coped parapet, with a stack positioned to the right.
The wing behind No. 11 includes two lights above a large elliptical arch, which is set back behind a six-panel door topped by a nine-pane light, along with a large 16-pane sash window. The interior has not been inspected, but building work in 1993 uncovered a truss dating from the 16th or 17th century at the rear.
