Description

Ruston's Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the 15th century, with extensions and alterations made in the early 16th century, 17th century, and 20th century. The building features a timber frame with brick infill, and is partly brick and underbuilt in brick, topped with old tile gabled roofs of varying heights. It has a T-plan layout consisting of three by two bays, with a crosswing that jetties on the south but is underbuilt in brick, likely from the 16th century. There is a 17th-century pent roof extension on the north side and a large two-storey 20th-century extension on the right, which is not of special interest. The farmhouse stands at two storeys high, with a chimney located on the ridge in the center.

On the entrance front, the main part is underbuilt in brick on the ground floor, featuring scattered 19th and 20th-century casement windows. The entrance door is positioned to the left of center and is accompanied by a 20th-century gabled porch. There are also 20th-century French casement doors with glazing bars located at the left-hand corner. The right side has a gabled crosswing with tile hanging in the gable, a three-light casement window on the first floor, and 20th-century French casements cut into the old brickwork beneath the former jetty.

Inside, the farmhouse showcases a fine quality exposed frame with large tension braces on the ground floor, jowled posts, and two old three-light diamond mullioned windows on the former external wall in the third framed bay from the left on both floors. The roof structure is partly queen post and partly simple coupled with trenched purlins.
