Description

Ashridge Cottage is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates from the late 15th century, with extensions added in the early 17th century and further alterations and extensions in the 20th century. The building features a mix of part timber framing encased in painted brick and areas of painted brick. It has old tile roofs that are both hipped and gabled, arranged in an L-plan with two framed bays and later side and rear extensions. The cottage is partly one storey and partly two storeys high.

There is one ridge chimney located to the left of the center, along with two additional chimneys on the roof slopes at the rear. The front of the building is irregular in shape. The windows are 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The right-hand section of the cottage is from the 16th century and has a gablet that breaks the eaves, featuring three 2-light casements on the ground floor. To the left, there is a 20th-century planked entrance door with sidelights, sheltered by a hipped porch supported by four posts.

In the older section, much of the timber framing is exposed, showcasing large jowled posts and large curved wind and knee braces. The ends of the building have arch-braced collar trusses, and there is a redundant crown post truss in the center.
