Description

Rose Cottage is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates back to the 14th century, with alterations made in the 17th century and further changes and extensions in the mid-20th century. The building features a combination of timber framing with painted brick infill and sections of painted brick. It has an old tiled gabled roof and a rectangular plan that originally consisted of two framed bays with a gable facing the road; it has since been modified into a T-plan with an extension on the east side.

The cottage is two storeys tall and has a prominent weathered chimney on the gable, along with another chimney on the extension, both topped with clay pots. The windows are 20th-century iron leaded casements. The entrance, located on the north front, is irregular. The older part on the right includes one three-light window and one single-light window on the first floor, with two three-light windows on the ground floor. The large gabled extension on the left projects forward and features false timber work; it has three two-light windows on the first floor and two three-light windows on the ground floor, along with a plain 20th-century entrance door and a lean-to hood on the right. To the right of this extension, there is a section that slopes down over the internal staircase, which has two single-light windows.

Inside, the first floor reveals good quality exposed timber framing with large arch braces. The collar purlin roof has been significantly altered, but it retains a moulded crown post that was repositioned during the mid-20th century renovations.
