Description
Westwood Cottage is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates from the early 16th century and has undergone alterations and extensions in the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features a combination of timber framing with painted brick infill and sections that are entirely painted brick. The roof is made of old tiles and has both hipped and half-hipped sections.
The cottage is arranged in an L-plan with two framed bays, and the solar is located at the north-west end. There is an 18th-century brick extension on the south-west side and a 20th-century extension on the north-east side. The exterior includes a rendered plinth, brick dentil eaves, and a plat band on the west front, while the timber frame is exposed at the rear. The building is one and a half storeys tall, featuring one chimney on the ridge near the center and another at the rear that has been cut down to eaves level.
The entrance front has an irregular arrangement of 2 and 3-light casement windows. At the upper level, there are two 2-light casements in semi-dormers, with one additional casement window below on the right side. To the left of this lower window is a planked entrance door, with two similar windows on the ground floor to the left of the door.
Inside, parts of the timber frame are exposed, and the roof features sooted rafters along with original wattle and daub, which may have once formed a smoke bay. There is also a 17th-century inglenook fireplace.
