Description

Berrowhill Farmhouse is a farmhouse, now a house, that dates from the late 16th century and has undergone alterations in the mid-18th century, mid-19th century, and mid-20th century. The building features part timber framing with brick infill, as well as brick refacing and additions, topped with a plain tiled roof. It has an L-plan layout consisting of two framed bays aligned east to west, with a large external chimney that has offsets and a detached brick stack at the west gable end. There is a framed single-bay wing on the rear north side of the east bay, and an 18th-century bay was added at the east gable end when the building was refronted to create a symmetrical facade.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The framing is visible at the west gable end and the rear wing, featuring close-set studding, a short straight brace in the upper corner of the west end, and collar and tie-beam trusses with closely set struts. The rear wing has a swept V-strut in the apex. On the south front elevation, there are two 3-light casements on both the ground and first floors, along with a central 2-light casement on the first floor. A central 20th-century gabled brick porch includes a 3-light casement with a cambered head at its front gable end, a 2-light casement on the right side, and a 20th-century door on the left side.

Inside, the cross-frames of the main part and much of the rear wing are still intact, although the roof structure is said to have been altered. There is a large fireplace in the west bay, and a 19th-century wing is located at the rear of the west bay, along with a lean-to at the rear of the 18th-century east bay.
