Description

Numbers 14 and 15 on Victoria Road in Brighton are terraced houses built around 1830, designed as a symmetrical pair. They are finished in stucco with a slate roof.

The exterior features three storeys over a raised basement, with each house having one-and-a-half window ranges and sharing a blank central window. There are steps leading up to a flat-arched porch that includes pilasters and an entablature, with a doorcase that has diagonal glazing above the overlight. Each house is adorned with a pair of giant Greek Ionic pilasters at the ground and first floors, although the porches replace the lower part of the outer pilasters. All windows are flat-arched; the ground floor windows are set within a recessed round-arched panel, which has an inner archivolt and springing band that create a Venetian window in the Adam style. The ground and first-floor windows of No. 15 feature original 6/6 sash windows with margin lights, while No. 14 has replica sashes. There is a round-arched niche between the inner pilasters on the ground floor that holds a statue, along with an entablature. The attic storey has flat-arched windows positioned between panelled pilasters, though this section has been somewhat altered. The roof is hipped with a central stack.

The property is complemented by walls that have coved coping, square stuccoed rusticated gate piers topped with a cornice and pediment, and cast-iron railings with spearhead finials and brackets. The interior has not been inspected.
