Description

Numbers 1-5 are a row of terraced houses built around 1825, located on the west side of Norfolk Square in Brighton. They are constructed of stucco, with roofs hidden by a parapet. The houses rise four storeys above a basement and feature a three-window range. The fronts of the houses include full-height and nearly full-width segmental bays. The ground floor is decorated with banded rustication and has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight. Most windows are flat-arched, with quadrant corners remaining on the first, second, and third floors of No. 1, Nos. 3-4, and all but the third floor of No. 5.

On the first floor, the central windows are topped with a pediment supported by consoles, while the outer windows have a cornice on consoles. There are bracketed balconies with cast-iron railings. The second and third-floor windows have bracketed sills and a storey band between them. The original design includes 6/6 sash windows on the first to third floors of Nos. 1 and 4, the second floor of No. 3, and the first floor of No. 5. No. 2 has been rendered, and all its sashes have been altered. The cornice and parapet are present, with the parapet being panelled on Nos. 1 and 3. There are chimney stacks on the party walls. The steps and area are enclosed by cast-iron railings with spearhead finials. The interior has not been inspected.
