Description

Numbers 1 and 2 are terraced houses located on Norfolk Road in Brighton, dating from around 1820. They are constructed of stucco, with the roof obscured by a parapet. The buildings rise three storeys above a basement and feature a two-window range. All windows are flat-arched.

Originally, the two houses were likely designed identically, but No. 1 has undergone alterations, including the removal of its entrance on Norfolk Road to match its neighbour, No. 116A Western Road. The ground-floor windows of No. 1 have one mullion, one transom, and quadrant corners to the upper lights. There is an elaborate storey-band between the ground and first floors, which is simpler between the first and second floors. The first-floor windows have panelled spandrels, while the second-floor windows retain their original sash design with three panes by six panes. The house features a cornice and parapet.

No. 2 has steps leading up to a flat-arched entrance that includes an overlight and a panelled door of original design, with the upper panels now glazed. There is a bracketed balcony on the first floor with an elaborate cast-iron balustrade. The first-floor windows have original sash designs with four panes by four panes, and there is a plain storey band between the first and second floors. The second-floor windows also have original sash designs with three panes by six panes, along with a cornice and parapet.

The interior has not been inspected. The houses have attached railings with spearhead finials, although those for No. 1 may be replacements. The standards flanking the entrance to No. 2 feature pineapple finials.
