Description

Numbers 28-31 are a row of terraced houses located in Russell Square, Brighton, built around 1820, likely by architect Amon Wilds. The houses are constructed of stucco and yellow brick, which is now painted, with a tiled roof that is partially visible. They rise four storeys above a basement and feature a single-window layout. The ground floor showcases banded rustication, with brick above.

Each house has a round-arched entrance with a fanlight, except for No. 28, which has a flat-arched entrance with an overlight and a panelled door decorated with an interlaced rectilinear pattern for Nos. 28 and 29. The original round-arched windows on the ground floor have been altered to flat arches. The upper windows are all flat-arched, with the first-floor windows being French doors that open onto a continuous bracketed verandah. This verandah is adorned with cast-iron railings featuring anthemion ornament and convex canopies supported by slim columns and segmental-arched braces. The second and third floors are flanked by stucco pilasters with palmette ornament on the capitals, and the second-floor windows are set under a cornice on consoles. The houses also have a cornice and blocking course, with chimney stacks on the party walls.

The area features cast-iron railings with bud finials. The interior has not been inspected.
