Description

Chawridge Manor Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a large house. It dates from the early 17th century, with extensions added in the late 18th century, and further alterations and extensions made in the mid-19th and 20th centuries.

The building features a mix of materials, including part timber frame with painted render infill and part painted brick. It has an old tile roof that is steeply pitched with gable ends at two different heights, showcasing visible rafter ends. The farmhouse has a rectangular plan consisting of two framed bays, with extensions on the north-west and south-west sides.

The exterior is two storeys high with an attic. There is one chimney that has been cut down on the ridge at the left and a large weathered chimney at the rear, which has two corniced shafts set diagonally on its base. The windows are from the 19th and 20th centuries and feature casements with segmental arched heads. The entrance front on the south-west side is irregular, with a 20th-century roof extension that includes a three-light window on the left and a set-back entrance porch on the right. There are two projecting windows with gables above, a one-bay section on the left, and a two-bay section on the right that has a two-light window and a four-light window on the ground floor, along with two two-light windows above.

Inside, some of the timber frame is visible. The principal beam on the ground floor is chamfered with a lambs tongue stop. In the dining room, there is a wide stone fireplace with hollow chamfered jambs that supports a four-centred arch.
