Description
Merrydown is a house located on Winkfield Street, originally known as The District Nurses Cottage and other cottages. It dates from the late 16th century, with the front being rebuilt in the late 18th century and altered in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame encased in brick, with some of the frame still visible on the sides, and has an old tile hipped roof.
The house has a rectangular plan with extensions at the rear and stands two storeys tall. It has one off-centre chimney with pots and a very large offset chimney made of narrow bricks that connects to a roof extension on the left. This chimney has two stacks with clay pots set diagonally on the base. The windows are 20th-century leaded casements, with an irregular arrangement on the entrance front, which faces west. The first floor has six 2-light windows, while the ground floor features a mix of 3:2:3:2-light windows with segmental arched heads. There are French casement doors located between the first and second windows. The entrance is now found in a small 20th-century lean-to extension that is set back behind the chimney on the left. The interior has not been inspected.
