Description
The Abbey Farmhouse, formerly known as The Gate House, Newington House, is a house located on Winkfield Lane in Winkfield Street. It dates from the mid-17th century, with extensions added in the 18th century and late 20th century.
The building is constructed of narrow, light red brick in English bond and features an old tile gabled roof. It has a rectangular plan with gabled projections at both the front and rear, along with a rear projection stair turret of later date. There is also a hipped extension at the rear, situated at the angle of the stair turret, and an extension on the left side.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with attics, featuring a brick plinth and brick bands at the first and second floors, with the bands on the right side being higher than those on the left. There is a tall space between the second floor band and the roof, and a ridge chimney with a projecting band and clay pots is located to the left of centre. The windows include sash and casement styles, all with glazing bars.
The entrance front, facing north-west, has a centre projecting gable with a single bay. At the first floor and attic levels, there are 2-light casements. The central door, which is from the 19th century, is plain. The attic window features a brick hoodmould, while the first-floor window has a gauged brick architrave with roll moulding, a bolection moulded frieze, a cornice, and a broken pediment with a pedestal and ball finial, along with strapwork cut patterns below the sill. The windows on either side of the projecting gable are early 19th-century sashes with gauged brick arches, although older segmented brick arches can still be seen in the brickwork above.
Inside, the farmhouse has been sympathetically refurbished in the late 20th century. It features a wide rectangular stairwell in the stair turret at the rear, several exposed wide timbers in the attic, and two old stone fireplaces on the first floor. The doors have moulded architraves, including one with a shouldered architrave.
