Description

Newington House is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations and extensions made in the 19th and late 20th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and has a hipped old tile roof. Originally designed with a four-cell central staircase plan, the layout has been modified with the staircase and entrance relocated, along with extensions added to the rear and sides.

The house features two storeys, attics, and a basement, with a brick cornice and a plain parapet that has stone coping extending around the hipped gable ends. There are two chimneys with clay pots on the older section, and 20th-century urn finials on the corners of the parapet. The 18th-century sash windows have glazing bars, stone sills, and gauged brick arches with white keystones. The former entrance front, located on the northeast side, is symmetrical with three bays. It includes a part-glazed central door framed by a moulded architrave, a frieze with a mask, and a break front cornice hood supported by console brackets. There are four oval plaques with radial fluting at the first-floor level.

The interior features an 18th-century dog-leg staircase with a column on vase balusters, a closed string with moulded tread ends, and cast iron fireplaces in two bedrooms, each with marble insets and egg-and-dart ornamentation.
