Description

The Cumberland Footbridge over the Grand Union Canal, located at the Outer Circle in Regents Park, was built around 1864 and manufactured by Henry Grissell in London, as indicated on the beams. This cast-iron footbridge features a single span that gently arches from masonry abutments. It has load-bearing beam arches of H section that support subsidiary girders for the footpath decking. The bridge is decorated with a foliate running pattern in the spandrels.

The cast-iron railings are adorned with enriched arcaded decoration and supported by scroll-bracketed standards. The abutments are made of Portland stone with a rusticated plinth, which supports piers topped with cornices featuring stiff leaf ornamentation. These piers are crowned with cast-iron lamp posts that have candelabra bases adorned with lion masks, column shafts, 20th-century reproduction lanterns, and single ladder bars. The approaches to the bridge are lined with coped masonry parapets.

At the northern end, there are additional features, including cast-iron railings with torch flambe finials that curve on each side to tall stone piers topped with torch flambe urns. The footbridge was previously listed twice under the parish of Marylebone, but that entry was removed from the List on 30 November 2017.
