Description
A swing footbridge, dating from 1862, located at Surrey Docks. The bridge was designed and manufactured by Henry Grissell, a recognized ironmaster. It was relocated to its current position in the mid-20th century from the Surrey entrance basin. The bridge is a distinctive stayed-cantilever design, unusual for metal bridges, featuring an arched wrought-iron span supported by iron rods connected to a cast-iron counterweight. Original hand operating gear remains, although an oil hydraulic mechanism was added in the 1980s.
