Description
Greenland Lock, including gates, bollards, and capstans, is a lock that was reconstructed for the third time between 1894 and 1904 by engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry. The lock is brick-lined and features granite kerbs along with iron bollards and capstans. The lock gates are operated by hydraulic rams that act directly on the gates, marking an early use of this technology in Britain. The machinery is preserved in its original location. Additionally, there is a raised lip at the edge of the granite lockside coping, which serves as a safety measure that was previously used in Liverpool. The hydraulic mechanisms were supplied in 1898 by Sir W.G. Armstrong, Mitchell and Co Ltd.
