Description
Vernon House is a terrace, originally comprising eight houses, but now converted into a single building, dating from around 1860 and subsequently altered. The building is constructed of stucco, with a rusticated ground floor and quoins. It rises four storeys and has basements, with projecting end bays; the left-hand bay has an additional attic storey. The symmetrical facade has thirteen windows and a three-window return on the left-hand side. Prostyle Doric porticoes extend across the front and around the building, with dentil entablatures. Doorways were originally located at the left return, formerly numbers 5, 6 and 10, and feature pilaster jambs supporting cornice heads, sidelights, fanlights, and half-glazed doors; other doorways have been converted into windows. The ground-floor windows are tripartite sashes, most with cast-iron window guards. The projecting left-hand bay has a canted bay window and a cast-iron window guard. Second-floor sashes are architraved with console bracketed segmental pediments and continuous cast-iron balconies; the projecting left-hand bay also has a canted bay window and balcony. Second-floor sashes have console bracketed cornices. Third-floor sashes are architraved with keystones. The projecting left-hand bay has tripartite sashes to the third, fourth, and attic storeys, with a console bracketed cornice to the second floor. The exterior features a simplified dentil entablature, a console bracketed cornice, and a blocking course. The interior remains uninspected.
