Description

The Church of St Mark is a church built between 1851 and 1852 by Thomas Little, with later additions made around 1889-1890 by Sir Arthur Blomfield. The church was gutted in 1940 and reconstructed around 1956-1957 by A.B. Knapp-Fisher. It is constructed of Kentish ragstone with dressings of Bath and Doulting stone, and features slated pitched roofs in an Early English style. The church is oriented north-south and consists of a five-bay nave with aisles, a chancel, and a tower located at the south end of the west aisle. The liturgical "west" window has five pointed lights with an oculus above. The tower is buttressed and has an arcaded belfry topped with a splay-footed spire that includes lucarnes. The aisle windows are two-light traceried with hood-moulds, and there is a quatrefoil clerestory in pointed hoods. The main entrance is through a projecting porch with a moulded doorway on the west facade. The interior has not been inspected but is noted to contain a reredos by Sir Ninian Comper, which was installed to replace the original that was destroyed.
