Description
The North Entrance Gate, Keeper's Office, Storage Kiosk, and Canopy at the Zoological Gardens in Regent's Park were built between 1936 and 1937 by architects Lubetkin and Tecton. Originally designed as a refreshment bar, this structure was part of a larger plan to reconstruct the North Entrance to the Zoo. The canopy features an undulating slab of reinforced concrete supported by 4-inch steel columns. Beneath the canopy, the kiosk and office are made of dark red brick. The low, simple kiosk pavilion consists of four rooms and is four windows wide, with two doors, all set in projecting concrete frames. The counter is finished in cream faience and has a concave return on the east side. The office shares similar plain details. The two elements are visually connected and sheltered by the canopy, which includes pierced slits at the "eaves" on each end. This design builds on the kiosk and shelter created for Whipsnade Zoo between 1934 and 1938 and further develops the canopy concept seen in the entrance pavilion at Dudley Zoo.
