Description
The East Tunnel beneath the roadway of the Outer Circle is a pedestrian tunnel built around 1829 by Decimus Burton for the Zoological Society. It features a brick vaulted structure with a stucco-faced entrance on the south side. The entrance includes a semi-circular archway adorned with stucco voussoirs and a balustraded parapet situated between piers. Above this, there is a screen wall and a pediment, which were likely added by Salvin, the Society's architect in the 1860s. Decimus Burton was responsible for landscaping the gardens and designing the original zoo buildings for the Society from 1826 to 1841, drawing inspiration from the Paris Jardin des Plantes.
