Description

TQ 2883 NW CITY OF WESTMINSTER ZOOLOGICAL GARDENS 6/5 REGENT'S PARK NW1 5.2.70 East tunnel beneath roadway of outer circle - II Pedestrian tunnel beneath road. c 1829, by Decimus Burton for the Zoological Society. Brick vaulted with stucco faced entrance on south side. Semi-circular archway with stucco voussoirs and balustraded parapet between piers; screen wall and pediment above, probably added by Salvin, the Society's architect in the 1860s. Decimus Burton landscaped the gardens and designed the original zoo buildings for the Society from 1826 - 41, influenced by the Paris Jardin des Plantes.
