Footbridge, Balgay Park, Dundee

The footbridge in Balgay Park, Dundee, dates back to 1877 and is an elegant cast-iron structure dramatically positioned across a gorge with an 80-foot span. It features two segmental-arched ribs made from three castings, supported by latticed cast-iron struts in the spandrels and five transverse tie rods. The level walkway is supported by straight girders, with the original wooden surface replaced by pre-cast concrete and tarmac.

The bridge is anchored by two stone piers, with rock-faced rubble below the walkway and ashlar dies above. Cast-iron brackets with gothic spandrels support the approaches, which consist of short lengths of cast-iron girders extending from rock-faced abutments.

The footbridge is adorned with cast-iron inter-laced railings that include central cast-iron inscription plaques. Above the railings, there is a partly original wire trellis screen that connects wrought-iron uprights, which are decorated with realistic beaten metal flowers.
