Description

Dated 1877. Elegant cast-iron footbridge, dramatically

sited across gorge, 80' - span. 2 segmental-arched ribs

of 3 castings with latticed cast-iron struts in the spandrels,

and 5 transverse tie rods. Level walkway carried on striaght

girders. Surface probably originally wooden, replaced by

pre-cast concrete and tarmac.

2 stone piers, rock-faced rubble below walkway, ashlar

dies above. Cast-iron brackets with gothic spandrels carry

approaches, short lengths of cast-iron girders, from

rock-faced abutments.

Cast-iron inter-laced railings, with central cast-iron

inscription plaques. Over railings a partly original wire

trellis screen linking wrought-iron uprights decorated with

realistic beaten metal flowers.
