Description

The Lodge at the New Industrial School for Girls, located at 309 Blackness Road in Dundee, was designed by James MacLaren and Sons and is dated 1894. This building is a two-storey school constructed in a Scots Jacobean style, featuring snecked rubble with ashlar dressings. It has a symmetrical south front that is set back from the road on an elevated site.

The central entrance tower is three storeys high and includes a columned semi-circular arched doorway adorned with rusticated voussoirs. Above the entrance, there is a canted oriel window and a bipartite window with a pedimented dormer-head. Flanking the entrance are semi-circular turrets that feature strapwork decoration at the first floor and segmentally pedimented dormer-heads above the second-floor windows. The turrets have semi-conical roofs that transition into a pavilion roof, which is complemented by cast-iron brattishing and curvilinear gable stacks.

The building has symmetrical three-bay sections that connect to advanced outer wings, which are designed with curvilinear gables and feature two bays with strapwork heads at the first floor. The west elevation is also symmetrical, displaying three windows (with the center being bipartite) on either side of a central two-window curvilinear gable. The east elevation is asymmetrical, consisting of eight bays with off-centre wings that are two by two bays, featuring a curvilinear gable and a commemorative plaque.

At the rear, there are single-storey workshops and a boundary wall. The courtyard elevation is plain, with canopy awnings supported by simple cast-iron brackets on three sides. The interior has been largely altered and partitioned.

The property is accessed through cylindrical gatepiers topped with conical roofs. The single-storey lodge features a canted bay and a porch situated in the angle, along with a low-pitched broad eaved roof that has a central stack. The boundary walls are low and include wrought-iron railings.
