Description

West Park Hall, located at 319 Perth Road in Dundee, is a Victorian Italianate villa designed by James MacLaren around 1860, with extensions added in 1872 and a lodge built in 1874. The building is constructed of ashlar with painted margins and quoins and consists of two storeys.

The south elevation features a prominent central bay on the ground floor, which is advanced and includes a pilastered five-light arched window topped by a pierced parapet, with two single lights above. Flanking the central bay are canted bays on the ground floor, with tripartite windows above. A Greek key frieze runs above the windows, and a cornice and blocking course extend to the side elevations.

The side elevations are three bays wide, with the eastern side partially obscured by an extension. There is a porch on the western side, which was also extended by J F Stephen in 1993. This porch is made of channelled ashlar and features round-arched openings, one of which is blocked while the other has been converted into a French window beneath a vermiculated keystone and a pierced parapet. A shouldered wallhead stack is present, and a lower two-storey service wing was added to the north in 1872.

The roof is piended and covered with slate, with ashlar stacks. The windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern.

Inside, the villa boasts well-preserved panelled plaster ceilings in the principal ground-floor rooms. A columned corridor was created in 1872 when the main entrance was relocated from the west to the east. There is a plain stair window, and the first floor has undergone alterations.

The lodge is a single-storey structure built of ashlar, featuring a three-bay west elevation with a central door topped by a consoled pediment that rises through the eaves. The windows are margined, and the cill and eaves course are combined. The lodge also has a piended slate roof with a central stack and sash and case windows with a four-pane glazing pattern.

The property is enclosed by square gatepiers and low boundary walls along Perth Road, with higher boundary walls to the north, east, and west. A coach house and stable cottages are located flanking the rear entrance from West Park Road.
