Description
4 Hill Street is a villa located in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, attributed to architect James MacLaren and built in the later 19th century. The building is two stories tall and has a square plan, constructed of rubble masonry with painted ashlar dressings. It features some keystoned, round-arched windows on the ground floor, while the other windows are segmental, all fitted with plate glass sash and case glazing. The villa has bracketted eaves, shoulder wallhead stacks with moulded copes, original cans, and cast-iron rainwater goods with moulded hoppers. The roof is slate and piended.
On the south elevation, the villa presents a near-symmetrical three-bay façade. At the center, there is a single-storey rectangular corniced porch that is slightly advanced, featuring a blocking course and round-arched openings, with a single window above on the first floor. To the left on the ground floor, there is a slightly advanced tripartite corniced window, while the first floor has a bipartite window. The right side has an advanced bay with a full-height canted window.
The east elevation has two windows on the first floor to the right and a stack on the left. The west elevation also has three bays, with two single windows on the ground floor to the left and a bipartite window to the right, which has a moulded parapet. There are three single windows on the first floor and an off-centre stack.
The north elevation includes a single-storey piended-roof service projection on the left, with a door in the re-entrant and a stair window above.
Additionally, there is a wall along Hill Street to the north, featuring moulded pyramidal-capped ashlar gatepiers. The gateway at Church Street is corniced and has ashlar piers.
