Description

This is an enclosing wall and gatepiers dating from 1866, designed by Thomas Saunders Robertson. The wall is constructed of snecked rubble, with a rock-faced base course and a moulded coping, and steps down with the slope of the ground. A small section of the wall projects from the left side, featuring noon-shaped angles. Two gatepiers, located at 1 Camphill Road, originally belonged to the now-demolished Carbet Castle; they have chamfered angles, rock-faced panels at their bases, and moulded pyramidal caps. A single capped gatepier sits at 3 and 5 Camphill Road, positioned between fragments of the original wall which now form entrances to houses built around 1910. Carbet Castle was designed by Robertson for the Grimonds, built in 1866 on the site of Kerbet House. Original drawings for Carbet Castle are held within the National Records of Scotland (AND/49/1.2), and further information can be found in McKean and Walker (1985).
