Description
The public library on Queen Street in Broughty Ferry, Dundee, was designed by James MacLellan Brown and completed in 1928. It is a single-storey building with a rectangular plan and modern additions at the rear. The library features a classical style with a three-bay front, constructed from ashlar masonry, while the sides are made of snecked rubble. It has a base course, cornice, and parapet, topped with a flat roof.
The south elevation consists of three bays, with channelled quoins at the corners and an entablature that includes a parapet, which is balustraded above the outer bays. The central bay is advanced and features pilasters, a central doorpiece with a fanlight, and a two-leaf door adorned with wrought-iron grilles, flanked by windows. The outer bays each have a single window with bracketted cornices.
The east and west elevations are blank but include decorative cast-iron rainwater goods. Inside, the library has a painted cornice, large rooflights, and the original issue desk. Additionally, there are two cast-iron lamp standards by D W Windsor from Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, located on either side of the terraced steps at the south elevation.
