Description
2 Hill Street is a mid 19th-century villa featuring a single storey and an attic, with an irregular plan and gabled design. The building is constructed of ashlar on the south and west sides, while the north and east sides are made of whinstone rubble, topped with a slate roof. It has a base course on the south and west, a moulded eaves course, and flat-coped skews. The windows on the south and west have chamfered margins, while those on the other sides have stugged and margined reveals, with a glazing pattern of 4-pane and plate glass. The villa also features cast-iron rainwater goods, some with fluted hoppers, shouldered gables on the south side (with urns on the east gable), and elongated, moulded linked and single stacks.
On the south elevation, there are four bays, with the gabled outer bays advanced to the left. An open porch made of ashlar with a flat roof is located at the re-entrant, featuring a blocking course and piers that are moulded at the edges. The porch has two shouldered lintels at the front with a heraldic shield, a narrower arch on the right return, and a panelled door with a border glazed fanlight at the centre left, along with a window on the right. A modern dormer is situated at the centre, with a gable on the right that includes a window on both the ground and attic floors, and an advanced gable on the left with a window on both floors as well.
The west elevation consists of three irregular bays. The main house is on the right, featuring a window on the ground floor and a heraldic panel in the attic, topped with a jerkin head gable that has a wallhead stack. To the left, there is a slightly advanced single storey shouldered gable with a window on the right and a wallhead stack, along with a half-piended roof that extends down to a lower single storey bay with a window and a blocked door.
The north elevation has two single storey, irregular half-piended bays that are advanced on the left and right, with various doors and windows.
The interior has not been seen. Surrounding the property are boundary walls made of snecked rubble with rounded coping along Hill and Fort Street. There are two pyramidal-capped rusticated gatepiers at the footgate on Fort Street, and a post and lintel gateway at the footgate on Hill Street.
