Description

Hillside is an earlier 19th-century house located at 4 Forthill Road in Dundee. It is a two-storey building with a basement, situated on a sloping site, and features an L-shaped plan with two and three bays. The exterior is constructed from tooled coarsed rubble, with the northern wing rendered and lined. The building has droved and margined angles, painted window surrounds, and a slate roof. Notable architectural features include a covered staircase on the north side, a bracketed balcony on the west side, and a mix of two- and twelve-pane sash and case windows. The roof has coped wallhead stacks with original cans, as well as piended and platform roofs.

On the west elevation, there is a gablet canopied forestair at the left re-entrant, featuring fret-work balusters and valance with grey slates, which leads to a flat-roofed porch. The doorpiece is moulded and has a blocked fanlight above it. To the left return, there are three windows. The left side has a recessed bay with a door and window on the ground floor, and two windows on the first floor. The right side has an advanced bay with a door and a garage addition at the basement, two windows on the principal and first floors, and a balcony on the first floor with intricate cast-iron railings supported by four large stone curvilinear brackets. There is a stack located at the left re-entrant elevation.

The south elevation features a basement window on the left, with three windows on the principal and first floors, although the far right window on the principal floor is blind. There is a decorative cast-iron rainwater head and two widely spaced stacks. A set-back bay on the right has a door with a transom light, a window at the right return, a moulded string course, and a window on the first floor.

The boundary wall surrounding the property is round-coped and curves at the southwest corner. It includes two square-section ashlar gatepiers topped with moulded caps and stylised lions.
