Description

Cambus Lodge is a later 19th-century, two-storey, T-plan villa situated at 37 and 37A Camperdown Street, Broughty Ferry, Dundee. The exterior is constructed of coursed and snecked rubble with corniced ashlar stacks topped with decorative cans, painted dressings, and a grey slate roof. The windows are mainly 2- and 4-pane sash and case windows with chamfered margins, stop-chamfered at the bottom. The building features moulded gablehead stacks with corbel detail, ashlar-coped skews with moulded skewblocks, and cast-iron rainwater goods with decorative cast-iron hoppers.

The front (South) elevation has a single-storey, flat-roofed entrance porch set within the re-entrant angle, extending to a stepped-back bay on the left. The porch contains a panelled door, a fan light, and a keystoned, moulded elliptically-arched doorcase. A bipartite window is located to the left, and there is a single window to the left return. A moulded decorative parapet tops the elevation. A keystoned round-headed window is at first-floor centre, and a bipartite window is to the left, bearing the cipher 'JTMR' within a finialled dormerhead. An advanced, finialled gable is on the right, featuring a canted ground-floor window with a facetted roof and brattishing, a bipartite first-floor window with blind boxes, a moulded lintel and strapwork decoration. A modern single-storey garage is recessed on the far left.

The East elevation features the gable of the main house centrally, with single windows at ground and first floor. A recessed blank wall plane is on the left, while a service wing extends to the right, featuring an oriel window, single and bipartite windows at first floor, modern ground floor elements, and flat-roofed additions on the far right.

Inside, the porch features an encaustic tile floor and a tripartite inner doorpiece. Decorative foliate cornices are present, along with a scale and platt staircase with turned timber balusters.

The property is bordered by two pyramidal-capped gatepiers and a low wall to the South. Rubble walls with round coping define the East and West boundaries.
