Description
Herschal House is a circa 1827 house, later altered and extended, located at 10 Hill Street, 8A, 8, Broughty Ferry, Dundee. It has group value from its contribution to the streetscape.
The original house is a 2- and 3-storey, 4-bay structure. The exterior is harled with painted margins, topped by a slate roof and coped stacks. Most windows are plate glass sash and case, with uPVC frames on the first and second floors of the east bay. A band course runs along part of the south elevation, and the corners are margined. The west elevation features coped skews. A substantial canted bay was added around the mid-19th century, and further 2-storey additions were made in 1875, along with a division of the house. A canted window was added to the southwest in 1877.
The south elevation has a circa 1827, 3-bay house on the left. A door with a fanlight, approached by steps with cast-iron balustrade, is centrally positioned and slightly advanced. A single window sits above it on the first floor, and there is a squat gablehead stack. A set-back bay on the right has a single window on each of the ground and first floors. A full-height canted window is advanced to the left, with a canted dormer above. To the far right is a slightly advanced, 3-storey canted bay with three windows on each floor, a bracketed dormerhead on the second floor, and a piended roof.
The east elevation is 3-bay. A central, advanced bay has two windows on the ground floor and one on the first and second floors, with a bracketed dormerhead and piended roof on the second floor. A slightly advanced entrance porch is on the left return, featuring a shoulder-arched doorcase with heraldic shields, a panelled door with a transom light, and a shallow-pitched roof, plus a window on the first floor. A set-back bay on the left has off-centre windows on the second floor. A lower, set-back 2-storey bay was added in 1875 and has paired windows on the ground and first floors (with the first-floor window partially blocked) and a piended roof with a modern rooflight.
The west gable has windows on the ground and first floors to the right, and a small, off-set attic window.
The north elevation includes the original house on the right, a 2-storey advanced bay on the right, a single-storey entrance porch on the right return, a barred window on the ground floor to the right, and a 12-pane sash and case window on the first floor. A stair window is positioned on the left, along with a lying-pane canted dormer with a partially glazed piended roof and a rooflight. An advanced bay on the far left has a moulded wallhead stack, an entrance on the first floor, and four rooflights on the return.
The interior of the original house includes a drawing room with a plain marble chimneypiece, an intricate cornice with lattice-work, star and floral motifs, and an unusual staircase positioned in the northeast corner, featuring decorative cast-iron balusters. An attic room on the north side contains a timber chimneypiece and cast-iron basket grate, original flanking presses with doors, and a bell-pull.
