Description
Cameron House is a large, two-story house dated 1891. It is constructed of squared and snecked rubble with coursed, dressed rubble sandstone to the sides and rear, featuring polished and droved quoins. The house has a crowstepped gables and four bays. A base course and cornices are present. The detailing includes keystone details, hoodmoulds, stop-chamfered arrises, and stone mullions.
The southeast (entrance) elevation features a deeply set, modern part-glazed timber door with a decorative astragalled fanlight within a basket-arched, pedimented doorway. Above the doorway is a decorative cast iron gas lamp bracket, now converted. To the outer left is a slightly advanced tripartite window with a crenellated windowhead (a semicircular merlon at the centre). A canted window, also with a crenellated windowhead (a triangular merlon at the centre), is slightly advanced to the right of centre, with a further window to the outer right. On the first floor, a window is located in the bay to the left of centre, and a bipartite window, with a thistle finialled, crowstepped dormerhead, breaks the eaves. To the right of centre is a bipartite window with a datestone, possibly reading “A1891D,” and a hoodmould with a wrought iron finial. A crowstepped gable features above this window. Further a window is located to the outer right with a half-moon finialled dormerhead breaking the eaves.
The southwest elevation shows a broad, largely blank crowstepped gable with a gablehead stack to the right, and a window to the left at both ground and first floors.
The northwest elevation has a small ground floor window below a stair window at centre. A broad, blank bay is located to the right of centre with a shouldered wallhead stack, and a narrow window to the left of centre at both floors. Modern timber conservatory with a further window above is located to the outer left.
The northeast elevation is slightly lower, featuring a boarded timber door and an adjacent window at ground level within a crowstepped gable. A small window is off-centre right at both floors with an adjacent panelled timber door and a letterbox fanlight beyond, as well as a further timber door to the outer right. A window is present on each floor on the return to the right.
The stair window has a four-pane glazing pattern with coloured margins, with modern glazing elsewhere. The roof is covered in graded grey slates. Coped ashlar stacks with clay cans and ashlar coped skews with moulded skewputts are present, along with cast iron downpipes with decorative rainwater hoppers and fixings.
The interior includes an inner hall with a broken pedimented screen door featuring modern colored glazing and traditional leaded colored glazing in the flanking lights. Decorative plasterwork is found throughout the house, along with a timber balustered staircase.
A semicircular coped brick boundary wall is present, along with a corniced and pedimented ashlar pier.
