Description
Torhousemuir House is a mid to late 18th century, two-storey, three-bay house that has large Victorian additions from 1871. The original house features irregularly spaced bays constructed of rubble with polished red sandstone angle margins. It has architraved windows and a bolection moulded cornice. The ground floor windows have been enlarged in the late 19th century, and all windows are sash and case with 4-pane glazing. There is no original door; access is through the later additions. It is unclear if the original door was converted to a window or if it was originally off-centre to the right, which would suggest a ground floor with four bays. The internal layout has been significantly altered, but the first-floor drawing room still has a good chimneypiece. The end skews, stepped on one side, are likely early 19th century, and the house features corniced end stacks, octagonal cans, and good graded slate roofs with a sandstone ridge.
The rear elevation is built of rubble with granite quoins, and all openings are blocked, including a possible stair window that has been blocked in brick. There is a two-storey, single-bay piend-roofed addition to the east.
The 1871 addition to the southeast of the original house is a large, asymmetrical crowstepped structure made of rubble with polished cream sandstone quoins. The west elevation has four bays, with a gabled projecting right bay. It features a tripartite doorpiece in polished cream sandstone, with a door that has a barley sugar surround and a fanlight above. There is a margin-paned stair window above the door. The rear elevation has five bays, with a gabled projecting stair block at the centre, which includes a bipartite window. The flanking bays at ground level have bipartite windows, while the first floor has single windows. Most windows are either single light or bipartite, predominantly sash and case with 4-pane glazing. The addition has crowstepped gables, corniced end and axial stacks, some octagonal cans, and slate roofs, with some secondary glazing.
The gatepiers consist of a pair of square-section ashlar gatepiers leading to the drive, which may have been relocated. The southeast rear elevation features three bays, with a boldly projecting gabled right bay that has a crest above the first-floor window and a bipartite window at ground level.
