Description
16 Greenhill Gardens is a mid-19th century, two-storey villa with an irregular plan and Jacobean details. The building is constructed from coursed, stugged cream sandstone with polished dressings, featuring a base course and chamfered reveals.
The entrance elevation has three bays, with the left bay being gabled and advanced. At the center, there is an enclosed ashlar porch in the re-entrant angle, which includes an architraved basket-arched doorway flanked by single lights. Above the doorway, there is a parapet with a decorative carved pediment, and the door itself is boarded with decorative iron hinges. To the right of the porch, there is a single light, and above it, a single window at the first floor breaks the eaves in a pediment topped with a thistle finial. The advanced gabled bay to the outer left features two single windows at the ground floor, and above, there is a stone balcony supported by carved consoles, with a cast-iron balustrade. The first floor has two tall pilastered windows, which are now French windows with etched glass upper panels, adorned with carved strapwork pediments. There is also a hoodmoulded arrowslit window in the gablehead. The outer right bay contains single windows, with a first-floor window that breaks the eaves in a pediment featuring a stylized rose finial. The villa has small-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, shouldered and corniced gablehead stacks to the south, a corbelled polygonal gablehead stack to the west, moulded octagonal cans, moulded coping, block skewputts, and some original rainwater goods, including a hopper and bracket.
The interior was not seen in 1991.
The property includes corniced ashlar gatepiers to the north and south, a low coped boundary wall to the street (with a replacement gatepier to the driveway), and high coped rubble mutual walls.
