Description

Aldavhu is a mid-19th century, two-storey, three-bay villa located on Shore Road in Garelochhead. It has a symmetrical rectangular plan with a gabled roof, constructed from whinstone rubble featuring harl-pointing and polished sandstone dressings and margins. The building includes a base course and quoins.

On the east (main) elevation, there is a central door set within a slightly advanced doorpiece, which is raised at the center and features an armorial plaque. The door is surrounded by a shouldered arch and is a six-panelled design with a two-pane fanlight above. There is a window above the door, and flanking gabled bays, with the left bay being broader and containing a slightly advanced tripartite window as well as a window above it, featuring a trefoil in the gablehead. The left gable also has a full-height canted bay.

The north elevation has an M-gable with a squared balustraded stone porch at the center. There are two windows symmetrically placed on the first floor, and a window at ground level to the right of the left gable. The porch features a red sandstone balustrade with strapwork detailing, is raised at the center with an armorial plaque, and has a modern four-panelled door with a two-pane fanlight, along with a window on the right return.

The south elevation also has an M-gable, with the left gable being blank and the right gable featuring windows at both ground and first floor levels to the left.

The west (rear) elevation consists of three symmetrically arranged bays, with a gabled stone porch that is advanced at the ground left.

The villa features four-pane sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with Velux roof lights, and corniced sandstone ridge stacks with octagonal cans. Iron finials adorn the principal gableheads.

The boundary wall consists of rubble with harl-pointing and semicircular coping. There are three sets of ashlar gatepiers with chamfered arrises and sawtooth pyramidal caps, along with wrought-iron hoop-pattern gates and a cast-iron post that is fluted and topped with a finial.
