Description

Bryan's, located at 87 and 89 Dundee Road in West Ferry, Dundee, is an Italianate villa attributed to James MacLaren, built around 1867. This two-storey building has a rectangular plan and features lower service projections at the rear. It is constructed from tooled and snecked rubble sandstone with painted dressings and has a grey slate roof.

The villa includes a base course and a cill course at the first floor on the south and east elevations. The main elevation has rusticated quoins, while painted tooled and margined quoins are found elsewhere, including some windows and stacks. The windows consist of plate glass and four-pane sash and case designs, with canted windows that have chamfered reveals. The building is adorned with a moulded cornice and a decorative cast-iron parapet. The gables on the south elevation feature an open pediment treatment with moduled eaves and palmette finials. Corniced wallhead stacks have uniform cans and voluted shoulders on the east and west sides, and there are cast-iron rainwater goods with some decorative hoppers, along with piended and gabled roofs.

On the east elevation, there is a door with a round-headed fanlight at the left return of an off-centre porch, which has a later red-tiled canopy. This elevation also features a border-glazed round-headed window, a moulded cornice, and a decorative cast-iron parapet with angle dies. To the right, there is a window and three windows at the first floor, with a single-storey block to the right that contains two doors, a window, and a coped skew.

The south elevation is symmetrical with three bays. It has a tripartite window in a corniced raised panel at the centre of the ground floor, and a window at the first floor with corbel treatment. The slightly advanced bays on the left and right have canted windows at the ground floor and round-headed tripartite windows with raised margins at the first floor, featuring a patera motif at the gable.

The west elevation includes a door with a large fanlight at the centre, flanked by windows on the left and right, and three windows at the first floor. A lower block on the left has two windows and a gable dormer head with a coped skew.

Inside, the villa retains some original chimneypieces, decorative cornices, and ceiling roses. The well stair features turned balusters and newel posts designed with a lion's head motif, and there is an oak-panelled room on the ground floor.

The boundary walls consist of a round coped rubble wall on the south side, complemented by three pyramidal-capped painted gatepiers.
