Description
Harecraig House is a large villa dating to around 1835, built in the style of George Mathewson. The house has undergone several alterations and additions over the years. In the late 19th century, a canted window and dormers were added to the south front. The architectural firm Mills and Shepherd carried out work in 1905, adding a square window bay to the south, and in 1911, a pyramidal-roofed addition to the attic on the north side. Around 1930, Charles G Soutar extended the drawing room and installed a new chimneypiece for his own use.
The house is arranged over two main storeys, with an attic and partial basement, and has a two-storey service block at the rear, forming an L-shaped plan. It is constructed of harled whinstone rubble with a slate roof and ashlar-linked stacks. The building features margined angles, and the windows are predominantly 2-pane, 4-pane, and 12-pane sash and case, with some casements, and chamfered margins. Deep eaves are present.
The east elevation has an advanced, off-centre entrance porch, and two round-headed windows (one blocked). The south elevation is three-bay and symmetrical, featuring an advanced central bay with a small basement window, a ground floor window with a hoodmould, and a first-floor window – all sash and case. A round-headed attic window with bars is positioned centrally. A set-back bay on the left has a canted window at ground floor, and a simpler window above. A set-back bay on the right, largely a 1905 addition, incorporates small basement windows, a ground floor window with a hoodmould and first floor window with wide reveal panels. The west elevation is three-bay, with a symmetrical main block to the right. A modern porch shelters French doors on the right, and the first floor has three windows, the centre one blind. A lower, two-storey service block is situated at the left. The north elevation features a set-back centre bay with a stair window, an attic storey with an off-centre oriel window, and a pyramidal roof. Original gables flank the main block, each with a narrow, round-headed attic window.
The interior includes three delicate, loop-traceried fanlights in the hall and inner hall, and a boarded clockroom. The dining room features a chimneypiece made from marble, cast iron, and brass, with flanking presses showcasing decorative leaded glazing, and a decorative plaster cornice. A large timber and tiled chimneypiece is in the drawing room. A well stair incorporates decorative cast-iron balusters. Early chimneypieces can be found in a southeast bedroom and the attic, alongside an Art-Nouveau chimneypiece (formerly Charles Soutar's workroom).
A coped and stepped rubble boundary wall runs along the north side, partially incorporating the remains of a coach house and stables.
