Description
Taycliff is a French/baronial-style villa located at 20 Dundee Road, West Ferry, Dundee, designed by Charles Edward and Thomas Saunders Robertson in 1862, with an extension added to the west by James Findlay in 1908. The building is two stories high with an attic and semi-basement, featuring an irregular plan. It is constructed from snecked rubble and has a grey slate roof, which displays a fishscale and diamond pattern at the porch and towers. The villa includes a base course and has single and bipartite windows with stop-chamfered margins; some of these windows have had their mullions removed and most now feature alloy frames that are not in keeping with the original design. The gables reveal exposed rafters, and the eaves are bracketted at both the square and round towers.
On the east elevation, the villa has a four-bay layout with a pitched entrance porch that is off-centre. The porch features decorative bargeboards, and the gable is inscribed with 'TAYCLIFF 1862'. To the left, there is a bipartite window, while a three-storey tower bay on the right has windows on all floors, including re-entrant windows on the first and second floors. This tower is topped with a flat-top pyramidal roof, although the brattishing is missing. The far right bay has a bipartite window at ground level, a single window on the first floor, and a pointed window in the attic. The far left has a recessed bay with a window, two symmetrically placed windows on the first floor, a gabled dormer, and a shouldered stack.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a central bay with a window on both the ground and first floors, along with a bipartite gabled dormer. To the left, there is a round angle tower with three windows on the ground and first floors, a raised wallhead level, and a conical roof topped with a weathervane finial. A later recessed bay on the far left includes two windows at ground level and a gabled dormer at the first floor. The advanced gable at the far left has a four-light canted window at ground level, a bipartite window on the first floor, and a pointed window in the attic. There is also a segmental bay at the left re-entrant that contains a door to the basement and a window on both the ground and first floors.
The north elevation features a two-bay design with an off-centre door on the left and a window on the first floor. To the right, there is a projecting conservatory with two windows on the first floor, and the roof is gabled.
Inside, the villa boasts a richly patterned encaustic tile floor in the porch, along with decorative cornices, plasterwork, and some original chimneypieces.
The property is also accompanied by gatepiers and a boundary wall, which includes two circular-section rubble gatepiers topped with pyramidal caps and a round-coped rubble boundary wall to the north.
