Description
St Helens is a 2-storey villa located at 474 Perth Road in Dundee, designed by Charles Wilson in 1850 and later extended in the 20th century. The building showcases a vigorous Scots Baronial style, featuring crowstepped gables and strapworked pediments above single light windows on the first floor. Most windows are adorned with roll-moulded architraves, and there is a continuous cill-course at the ground floor.
On the eastern elevation, a Roman Doric columned portico with a strapworked parapet is positioned at the advanced left gable, with single windows in the center. The central gable is advanced and features a 3-light ground floor window with a shallow advanced section and a stepped parapet. Above, the attic light is flanked by corbelled turrets. To the north, there is a single storey and attic wing that has a later dormer and an advanced gable.
A distinctive tower is located at the re-entrant southwest angle, transitioning from a circular to a square plan. It has single lights at the top stage, corbelled eaves, a pyramidal roof, and a weather-vane.
The southern elevation includes an advanced gabled bay to the right, featuring a canted window with a strapworked parapet at the ground floor. There is also a projecting northern bay vestibule with a Venetian treatment, topped with circled windows and swagged gableheads.
On the western elevation, there are two advanced gables with ground-floor canted bays, the right one having a strapworked parapet. The center features an altered stair window. The villa is capped with tall ashlar stacks that have separate octagonal shafts, and the roofs are slate, with fish-scale detailing at the turrets. The windows are sash and case, with a 2- and 4-pane glazing pattern, and lying-panes in the service wings. A 2-storey harled addition is present at the northwest.
At the rear, there are 2-storey U-plan service ranges with additional structures. The interior has been subdivided but retains notable plasterwork and a mirrored overmantle.
Additionally, there is a single-storey lodge in an L-plan, constructed of stugged ashlar with crowstepped gables and a canted V-window to the west. The lodge features a crowstepped porch in the re-entrant angle and a flat-roofed extension, with a slate-hung addition to the south. It has chamfered stacks and slate roofs, with sash and case windows featuring a 2-pane glazing pattern.
The property is enclosed by ashlar gatepiers and boundary walls, which include a stepped shouldered arched pedestrian entrance with an armorial.
