Description
Cidhmore House, located at 488 Perth Road in Dundee, is a large Italianate villa built in 1868. The building features ashlar stonework with polished dressings and quoins. Most of the windows are margined and have moulded stilted segmental heads with small keystones. There is a continuous cill course at the first floor and bracketted eaves.
On the east elevation, the near central bay is advanced and includes a wide porch supported by Doric columns and square piers, topped with a triglyph entablature. The doorpiece has a consoled pediment and is bipartite above. There are three bays on each side, with one- and two-light windows to the right and two single windows to the left, flanking a scalloped niche on the ground floor and an armorial dated to the first floor.
The south elevation has five bays, with the end bays advanced and featuring canted ground floor windows and tripartite windows on the first floor. The centre has three ground floor windows with consoled cornices and aprons.
The west elevation is six bays wide, with three bays on the left recessed. The right side has a canted bay with a bipartite window above and twin corniced round-headed lights. Two windows have been altered to doors.
The rear of the house is single-storey but has been heightened to two storeys. Round-headed dormers break the eaves on the east and west sides, while the north side has gabletted dormers. The building has wallhead and ridge stacks with two, three, and four square shafts and bracketted cornices, all under piended slate roofs. There are also later small dormers.
The windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern. Inside, there is a tiled vestibule and fine plaster ceilings with original paintwork and gilding in the principal ground floor rooms. An ornate timber stair leads to a three-light stained glass window featuring putti. The first floor is partitioned, and most fireplaces have been removed.
The lodge associated with Cidhmore House has similarly detailed masonry and is L-shaped with a porch at the re-entrant angle on banded square piers. It features round-headed bipartite windows facing the street, canted bays to the west and south, bracketted eaves, and a square shafted stack under a piended roof. The lodge also has sash and case windows, low boundary walls, and altered gatepiers.
