Description

The Boreen is a two-storey and attic Arts and Crafts house, built in 1911 by Thoms and Wilkie. It is constructed from random rubble stone with ashlar dressings. The south elevation is asymmetrical, arranged over five bays. The left bay is recessed, featuring a five-light mullioned and transomed bow window on the ground floor with small gargoyles, and a four-light window above. A round arched, chamfered doorway with an iron lamp is situated in the second bay from the left, with a bipartite window and attic light above, set within a gable and incorporating a wallhead stack to the left. The third and fourth bays have simple tripartite windows to both the ground and first floors. A corbelled parapet tops the elevation. The final bay on the south side features a five-light bow window similar to the left bay, alongside a four-light window on the first floor and a bipartite attic window within a large gable. An additional single-storey wing extends to the east, with a bipartite window and overhanging eaves. The west gable has a shallow projecting Inglenook, incorporating a small window.

The east elevation features roofs that sweep down to a timber-canopied courtyard, with a ground floor triple-light window and a bipartite, piend-roofed dormer above. A wallhead stack is also present. A door and shuttered hatch lead from the east wing to the street. The rear elevation has an entrance flanked by single windows, later incorporating a harled, flat-roofed dormer. An advanced gabled bay is present, with a cross stair window. Triple lights are located to the left, while an advanced west wing exhibits an irregular arrangement of single-light windows and a gable end stack with overhanging eaves.

The roofs are covered in stone flags, and tall rubble-built stacks are topped with dentil cornices. The windows are primarily casement windows with leaded panes, with sash and case windows to the rear wing. Original rainwater goods remain. Inside, the hall and stair are timber-panelled. Rubble-built boundary walls curve to meet a shouldered pedestrian entrance. Gatepiers to the north of the house have since been removed.
