Description
Lynefield is a villa built in 1878 by Charles Edward and Thomas Saunders Robertson, with additions and alterations made in 1911 by James Findlay. The building is basically rectangular and comprises two storeys and a basement. It is constructed of snecked rubble sandstone with ashlar and painted dressings, and has a grey slate roof. A base course runs around the building, and a continuous hoodmould course sits above the ground floor windows. Moulded eaves and cast-iron rainwater goods with fluted hoppers are present, alongside plate glass and four-pane sash and case windows. Bipartite, round-headed windows are found on the south and west elevations, featuring pilaster mullions and foliate capitals, and are accompanied by bracketted stone balconies with cast-iron parapets. Decorative cans adorn the corniced stacks, and the roof is piended.
The west elevation features a projecting, single-storey open porch with basket-headed arches on the right, which continues across the full width of the house. This is balanced by single, bipartite, and paired windows, a border-glazed window on the left return, a corniced and mannered pediment, and painted dressings. Three bipartite windows are located on the first floor.
On the south elevation, there's a slightly advanced bay on the right containing a three-light canted window with a corniced and mannered parapet; above this is a bipartite window. A bay to the left features a tripartite rectangular window with sidelights at ground floor, similarly detailed to the canted window. Above this are two bipartites on the first floor. A conservatory is situated at the far right, abutting a lower, two-storey recessed service wing with four windows on the first floor; the two outer windows have piended dormerheads.
The north elevation has a door at the centre accessible by a forestair. There are two windows to the left and a tripartite rectangular window with side windows to the right (added in 1911). The forestair is positioned within what was previously a paired, round-headed stair window. A round-headed window is located on the left and a rectangular oriel extends from the far left. A lower, two-bay service wing extends to the outer left and was extended in 1911 and includes two doors, a window, and an integral garage at ground floor, with two piended dormerheads on the first floor.
The interior features a staircase that has been removed. Notable features include a stained glass window, an original marble-topped, cast-iron radiator cover in the hall, decorative cornice and ceiling plasterwork, and some original chimneypieces.
Two painted pyramidal-capped gatepiers mark the entrance on Bayfield Road. A round-coped rubble wall defines the boundaries to the north, east, and west.
