Description
Hazelwood is a large villa, originally built in 1872 by Charles Edward and Thomas Saunders Robertson, with significant additions made in 1846 by John Murray Robertson. It is an irregular-plan building constructed of snecked and random rubble with red ashlar sandstone dressings, and a grey slate roof. The windows are predominantly plate-glass sash and case, with winialled gable dormerheads on the south elevation, featuring plain bargeboards and exposed purlin ends; the chimneys have decorative cans, and the roof is piended.
The east elevation features an entrance porch in the re-entrant angle, with a pilastered angle pier and a large, diamond-glazed fanlight topped with a wrought-iron parapet. There is a window at first floor level to the right, and an advanced bay with paired border-glazed windows at ground floor, and a single window above. A later bay is positioned at the far right, featuring two bipartite windows on both the ground and first floors and placed asymmetrically.
The south elevation, five bays wide, has an advanced gable in the second bay from the right, containing bipartite windows at ground and first floor levels. A bracketed wrought-iron balcony is present on the first floor, and a round-headed, keystoned and margined window is set within the attic gable, along with a heraldic shield. Segmental bows are visible on either side of the re-entrant angle, incorporating windows on both floors. The bay at the right has a tripartite canted window at ground floor and a bipartite window at first floor, with a dormerhead above. A similar bay is on the left, with a four-light canted window on the ground floor, a cast-iron balcony, and a matching dormer. A turret is situated at the far left with tripartite windows on ground and first floors, extending to an octagonal attic floor with windows and a facetted, ogival roof topped with a finial.
The west elevation has two bays, with a door and conservatory on the left, and a window at first floor level above. A wallhead stack and an angle turret are on the right, mirroring those on the south elevation.
The north elevation presents three projecting bays, along with two single-storey additions and various doors and windows.
The interior features an entrance door in the porch complete with six panels and a fanlight, a mosaic floor, stained glass, and a marble chimneypiece with an Art Nouveau painted overmantle in the inner hall. A well stair is present, with turned balusters, and a border-glazed stair window featuring stained glass panels.
A decorative cast-iron lamp standard with a lantern stands nearby. Four red sandstone drum piers, capped with conical tops and parabolic quadrants, form the gate piers (original railings are missing). Rubble boundary walls delineate the property to the north, south, and east.
