Description

The Croft, located at 5-5A Albany Road in Dundee, is a villa designed by John Murray Robertson in 1898. This two-storey and attic building has an irregular plan and is constructed of red brick with a red tile roof. It features mostly 10-pane sash and case windows, along with some multi-pane casements. A cill course runs along the first floor, and there is trellis work attached to the first floor on the south and west sides. The eaves display exposed rafter ends, some plain bargeboards, and there are swept dormerheads and piended-roof, ribbed, and coped stacks.

On the west elevation, there is a gabled porch on the left with a two-leaf door flanked by windows, and a single window on the first floor. To the right, a multi-pane bow window is present, with a bipartite window above that breaks the eaves. A horizontal window is located at the far right on the ground floor, and a projecting diagonal gable on the outer right features a four-light window at the ground floor, with bipartite windows at the return and a tripartite window on the first floor with single windows at the returns.

The south elevation has a symmetrical three-bay recessed section, with a verandah at the ground floor supported by turned timber columns. Above, there is a projecting window on the first floor flanked by single windows, both of which project through the eaves. Two four-light gabled dormers are also present. A projecting diagonal gable on the left mirrors the earlier description, while the projecting gable on the right features a tripartite window at the ground floor, with a door and window at the returns. The outer right has a recessed bay with modern sliding doors on the left, a window on the right, and a bipartite window on the first floor that breaks the eaves.

The east elevation includes a window and a flat-roof projection at the ground floor, along with two single and two bipartite windows on the first floor. The north elevation features a piended roof bay on the left that sweeps down on the right, with a lower lean-to at the far right and various doors and windows.

Inside, the villa has been subdivided into several units, resulting in some loss of original features. Additionally, there is a coped rubble wall and gatepiers located at Strathearn Road.
