Description

Fairfield House is a 2-storey and attic villa built in 1870 by Andrew Heiton. It has a roughly U-shaped plan and is situated at 5, 7 Fairfield Road, West Ferry, Dundee.

The house is constructed of ashlar stone, with snecked rubble at the rear and on the coach house. Distinctive features include polished ashlar quoins and dressings, a grey slate roof, a base course, a cill course at the first floor level, and sash and case windows. Some of the first-floor windows have been altered with modern frames. The window margins are stop-chamfered, and the first-floor windows are shoulder-arched. The roof has piended dormers and shouldered stacks. A cast-iron brattishing (decorative ridge detail) is present on the west ridge, but is missing elsewhere. The roof structure is of a French design. Finials adorn the roofline.

The east elevation has a recessed bay to the left and an open, shoulder-arched porch in the re-entrant angle to the right. The front door is oak-panelled, featuring carved foliate motifs on the architraves and a leaded fanlight. There is a window on the first floor and a wallhead stack. An advanced bay on the right contains a paired window at ground floor level, a bipartite window on the first floor, and a dormer. A lower bay at the far right has three windows at ground floor level and a four-light window with a swept dormerhead above.

The south elevation features a bipartite window in the centre at ground floor level, and a paired window above. A projecting tripartite window is located to the right, with a bipartite window on the first floor, and a dormer above. A lower, piended-roof block projects to the left, containing three ground floor windows and a dormer.

The west elevation shows the main two-bay house to the right, with a similar configuration of windows and dormer as the south elevation. A lower, piended-roof block projects on the left, featuring three ground floor windows and a four-light window with a swept dormerhead on the first floor.

The north elevation has a three-light border-glazed stair window in the recessed central section. An advanced gable is on the left with a wallhead stack, while the right return elevation has a door and windows. An advanced wing to the right has a wallhead stack and a door and windows on the left return elevation.

Inside, some original fireplaces remain. The staircase features square-section balusters, and the leaded stair window incorporates mottled glass.

A two-storey, rectangular-plan coach house is located to the northwest of the main house, with an enlarged entrance on the ground floor and a forestair leading to the first floor. The coach house has a piended roof. A wrought-iron lamp standard stands in the driveway. A rubble boundary wall extends along the east side, with quadrants leading to two round-section, bull-faced gatepiers.
