Description
Craigmore, located at 36 and 38 Albany Road in West Ferry, Dundee, is a villa built in the later 19th century. This two-storey and attic structure is designed in a U-plan with a single-storey L-plan service projection and features three bays. The exterior is made of tooled sandstone coursers with ashlar dressings and has a grey slate roof. Notable architectural details include a base course, a cill course at the first floor, and a moulded wallhead course. The windows are plate glass sash and case types with stop-chamfered margins. The rectangular and canted windows have moulded lintels, moulded cornices, and decorative cast-iron parapets, while the eaves and cornices are also moulded. The stacks have uniform cans, and the property is equipped with cast-iron rainwater goods featuring decorative hoppers and piended roofs.
On the east elevation, there is a door with a moulded doorcase at the left return of an off-centre porch, accompanied by two windows. The elevation has a moulded cornice with a cast-iron parapet, with one window on the left, two on the right, and four on the first floor, along with a tripartite dormer and a single-storey lean-to at the far right with a coped segmental wall.
The south elevation features a slightly recessed bay at the centre with a tripartite rectangular window at ground floor level, three windows on the first floor, and a tripartite dormer. Flanking gabled bays have canted windows at ground floor level, with the centre window modified to a French window on the left and a bipartite window on the first floor.
The west elevation has an off-centre added door and tripartite rectangular windows on both the left and right, although the right window is blocked at the centre. There are five windows on the first floor, with the second from the right being louvred and a smaller window to its left, along with a tripartite dormer.
The north elevation features a modern forestair leading to a former stair window at the recessed central bay, flanked by plain irregular gabled bays. The L-plan service projection on the right has been partly altered to serve as a garage, with a door, various windows, and a raised ridge rooflight.
Inside, the staircase has been removed at ground floor level, but richly moulded cornices remain in the former public rooms, along with some marble chimneypieces.
The property is complemented by gatepiers and a boundary wall, which includes three pyramidal capped ashlar gatepiers at Albany Road and four similar painted gatepiers at Fairfield Road, featuring plain iron railings at the quadrants. There is also a rubble wall with round coping on the north and east sides.
