Description
Ormesdene is a two-storey villa built around 1900, located at 38 Dirleton Avenue in North Berwick. The building features a red ashlar base course with harled walls above, painted margins, and a cill course on the first floor. The gable heads are adorned with applied timber framing, and the windows include plate glass glazing in casement styles with lead-paning above the transoms, as well as some small-pane sash and case windows.
The south elevation is asymmetrical, showcasing an angle turret on the left with multi-light windows at both the ground and first floors, topped with a cone roof. An off-centre, large round-arched recessed porchway is located to the right, featuring a tripartite doorway with a double-leaf door, round-arched lights, and a segmental fanlight. Above the porch, there is a four-light window, with a three-light window in the flanking bay to the left. To the right, a canted outer bay includes multi-light windows and a jettied gable head.
On the west elevation, there are recessed bays to the left and an angle turret to the right, similar to the south elevation. A canted multi-light bay is positioned at the centre, adjacent to an advanced wing.
The north elevation has advanced bays to the left, featuring a large gabled dormer. A stair window is raised in the re-entrant angle at the centre.
The east elevation presents blank outer bays with lower eaves to the right and irregularly placed windows at the centre. The roof is covered with red plain tiles and features overhanging eaves, supported by coped ashlar stacks.
Inside, Ormesdene boasts several outstanding features, including a lugged panel with a waved pediment above the hall fireplace, which is adorned with scenic oil paintings by P W Adam. The interior also includes lugged and moulded door surrounds, as well as fine chimneypieces.
Additionally, there is a summer house on the property, which is a brick, gabled pavilion with applied timber framing on the gable heads. It has a three-bay, rectangular plan and features a projecting timber loggia with a depressed centre archway, flanked by small-paned round-headed windows.
The property is enclosed by a rubble boundary wall to the north and west.
