Description

Baltrenon is a house located at 22 Dirleton Avenue in North Berwick, designed by Sydney Mitchell and Wilson in 1894. It is a two-storey building with an attic and a single-storey service range. The house has undergone several additions in 1910, 1928, and 1971. The exterior is harled, featuring a raised painted ashlar cill course at the ground level and a dentil cornice.

The south elevation has four bays, with a service block that projects from the left outer gable. There is a keystoned oculus in the gable head, and the doorway is set obliquely in the re-entrant angle, topped with a flat roof and railings. It has a bracketed canopy and panelled doors with glazed upper panels. To the right, there is a canted full-height bay that breaks the eaves with an ogee roof and an advanced stack bonded to the right. Tile hanging is present between the ground and first-floor windows of the canted bay, which also features a stair window to the right. The outer right bay at ground level has a canted six-light window with a tripartite window above.

The north elevation includes a sunroom addition from 1971 that spans the central bays, along with three first-floor windows. The right outer bay is gabled and contains two bipartite windows at both the ground and first floors. To the left, there is a canted full-height facetted outer-glazed bay with a finial, and tile hanging between the floors. Curved-headed three-light dormers and a small bipartite window are also present. A recessed single-storey wash house is attached to the right.

The west elevation features projecting outbuildings and irregular openings. The east elevation has a raised stack at the centre with two inserted windows at ground level. To the left, there is a diminutive three-light, half-piended oriel supported by a bracket.

The house showcases a variety of glazing patterns, including honeycomb lead-paned casements for the hall and stair windows, small-pane casements, and sash and case windows elsewhere. The harled stacks culminate in moulded brick, and the roofs are covered with red plain tiles, complemented by decorative gutterheads.

Inside, the property features decorative plasterwork, brass window and door fittings, a tiled vestibule, and a gravestone incorporated into the fireplace. The boundary walls are made of rubble and are located to the east and west, topped with semi-circular coping.
