Description

Seathwood is a two-storey ashlar villa located at 365 Perth Road in Dundee, designed by James Murray Robertson in 1883. The villa features a continuous first-floor cill course, overhanging eaves, and projecting bargeboarded gables.

The south elevation has three asymmetrical bays, highlighted by a central three-storey pavilion-roofed tower. The right bay is advanced and gabled, featuring a ground-floor canted balustraded bay. The first floor includes a tripartite hoodmould, while the central ground floor has a three-light French window. Heavy consoles support a first-floor balustraded balcony, which is accessed by double doors. The second floor showcases a tripartite window with swagged aprons. To the left, there is a flat projecting balustraded ground floor bay, with a tripartite window above.

The east elevation consists of single windows and an advanced porch with heavy consoles and a balustrade, topped with a gable. There is also a single-storey service wing. The west elevation features single and bipartite windows, along with one gable and a lower service wing that has a gablet.

The villa is topped with gabled slate roofs that have bracketed overhanging eaves and curved decoration on the bargeboards. It is adorned with wrought-iron finials and a weather-vane on the tower, as well as corniced stacks. The windows are sash and case with a two-pane glazing pattern.

Inside, notable features include stained glass windows in the stair and porch, possibly by Daniel Cottier, and a George and Dragon mosaic in the porch. The chimneypieces are decorated with mosaic and Walter Scott narrative tile surrounds. Some alterations have been made for office conversion.

Additionally, there is a single-storey lodge with a swept-roofed porch and a canted window in the advanced gable, featuring a similar treatment of gables to the main house, deep eaves, and finials. The property also includes square, pyramid-capped gatepiers with incised decoration.
